The Multistate Trust’s Commitment to Environmental Justice

We recognize that communities and especially residents living near former Kerr-McGee sites now owned and managed by the Multistate Trust have been disproportionately harmed by contamination from years of Kerr-McGee operations.

We are committed to upholding environmental justice principles, including transparency and open communication, while we work to clean up Kerr-McGee’s toxic legacy, foster economic healing and growth for communities with environmental justice concerns, and ensure that residents’ voices and ideas are incorporated into our efforts to remediate and redevelop former Kerr-McGee sites.

We are working to achieve the Multistate Trust’s environmental justice goals through three major program areas:

Community Engagement

We work to engage community members by sharing information with and seeking input from residents and stakeholders throughout the cleanup process, through regular public meetings, information sessions, community workshops, websites, fact sheets, newsletters, and personal outreach.

Local Contracting

Where possible, we seek to invest cleanup funds in local economies by fulfilling the Multistate Trust’s vendor and contracting needs locally, including by facilitating training programs to provide meaningful opportunities for local businesses to perform work at our sites.

Community-Supported Redevelopment

We strive to support the vision and priorities of communities for future use of our sites, with the goal of ensuring, where possible, that future site uses benefit the communities where our sites are located.

Incorporating environmental justice principles into our work, including robust community engagement, investing in communities through local contracting, and facilitating community-supported redevelopment, provides numerous advantages, both to the communities where our sites are located and to the Multistate Trust’s beneficiaries.

We implement environmental justice policies with the support of the Multistate Trust’s beneficiaries and consistent with the Tronox bankruptcy settlement agreements, including by securing required lead agency approvals, consulting with the non-lead agency and other interested agencies, and fulfilling the Multistate Trust’s fiduciary obligations.
